Baby donkey rescue
This little baby had become entangled in a rope. Luckily a local resident had spotted that he was trapped from the far side of the river valley. Volunteers attending the scene found the baby caught up in a rope that had been used to tie up the young male donkey. The rest of the parcela was in fantastic condition and it seems like it was an oversight on the owners part that he hadn´t considered the rope could become tangled round the baby´s neck.
Faced with a high fence and an uncastrated male donkey we set about finding the owner or someone who knew the owner. Climbing the fence would be our last resort but as time passed with no sign of the owner we became increasingly concerned. Our biggest fear was that with the rope taut the baby might lose his footing and fall to the ground with the rope still around his neck. Lots of people we asked had seen the owner at his property before and said he came everyday but perhaps he was late due to the big party at the week long Nerja Feria.
After an hour of searching for the owner and monitoring the situation the worst happened, the baby lost his footing and fell with the rope tightening around his neck. We were left with no option but to scale the fence. Once inside we attempted to distract the uncastrated male with some food so we could get to the baby in relative safety. Thankfully in falling the baby had managed to slip out of the rope and was free. However we were suddenly faced with a highly concerned frantic owner racing towards his donkeys whilst we were still inside. One of the locals we had spoken to had gone to fetch him and he had arrived at high speed. Worried he was going to flatten us as he passed we stepped aside to watch as he ran to his donkeys. He was extremely happy when we showed him that his animals were ok.
Although he tried to say to us that it was normal for the baby to become entangled by his legs his expression changed when we showed him these pictures on our camera of the rope tightly wrapped around his donkey´s neck.
